What's your favorite song with "America" or "USA" in the title? Bonus points if you share it with us.
There are a few, like Iced Earth's sincere rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner". And you can't forget Jimi Hendrix's version. Although these don't have "America" or "USA" in the title, do they?
Anyway, my very, very favorite is "America" by Spinal Tap. Certainly their original "Black Album" was the inspiration for Metallica's album of the same name. Yes? Anybody know?
The complete lyrics to this divine tune:
We came like babies
From our home across the sea
To see America.
And the people opened up their arms
To welcome us...to America.
We came like children
From a far and distant land
To see America, and the golden
Sun of freedom filtered down to us,
In America.
And the people stood and stared
Loved us more than we had dared--to
In America.
Super highways here and there
Pretty womens everywhere.
Brady Bunch and Smokey Bear.
Buildings reaching to the sky
Afro-sheen and apple pie.
PTA and FBI.
The jumbo jet begins to rise
A joyful nation waves its bye-byes.
Each religion, race, and creed
Gets exactly what they need.
God bless Johnny Appleseed!

I'm getting pretty damn sick of all the unbelievably fat people I see everywhere. Let me be clear: I do NOT like to see really skinny people, either, particularly skinny women. In my opinion, a healthy woman must have some fat in order to have shape and in order to be, well, healthy. I would even say that a woman with a little too much is far more attractive than a woman with a little too little. To be more specific, the woman in this video is NOT fat. Far from it. Not only is she attractive physically, she's attractive emotionally. And, kudos to Jennifer Love Hewitt for having the guts to stand up for normal-sized women.
But I'm talking about the HUGE. The immense. The utterly obese. The jaw-dropping, Jabba-esque fat people of this country. And I'm singling out the good old U.S. of A., because, statistically, we've got more of them than anybody else. I've read more than once that America is the only country whose rich folks are thin and poor folks are fat.
Maybe it's because we live in an urban setting and because we are near a not-so-good part of town, but we see more really fat people on the street than we do normal-sized. And yes, I do not think fat is "normal". It just isn't. Nothing that will prematurely kill you in the end is a good thing.
What sparked this post was a photo in an article I saw on Yahoo! Buzz, a service of Yahoo! that keeps people up-to-date on what is "hot". The article opens, "Break out the butter. Send in the sugar. Find your flour. It's time for Christmas cookies!" Nothing in the article about the incredible weight problems we have in this country and how too many of these cookies will kill you. BUT...a photo of an overly large woman next to a sign plastered with overly large cookies.
The fact that NOTHING whatsoever is said about the woman's size suggests to me that she is normal in the mind of the writer, and possibly in the minds-at-be at Yahoo!.
And this begs the question: Is "totally fat" acceptable? If your parent were to start getting this big, would you feel compelled to say something? A sibling? A spouse? A son or daughter? I know I would. And NOT because of embarassment or some "you-should-look-like-me" obsession.
But simply because, in the end, this woman's fat is going to kill her. And if I knew her, I might be the only one with the guts to tell her.
